Wilbert John “Pete” Boes, age 92, of New Riegel, died at 10:51 p.m. Sunday, January 31, 2010, at Volunteers of America Autumnwood Care Center, Tiffin.
He was born August 13, 1917, in Tiffin, to the late Albert and Elizabeth (Heinan) Boes. He married Doyle Blust in 1946 in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Tiffin. She died in February of 1948. He then married Hildegarde Meurer in October of 1950 in St. Joseph Catholic Church, and she survives.
Survivors also include four sons, Richard (Jacquie) Boes of Perrysburg, Ohio, John (Tammy) Boes of Green Bay, Wisc., Gary Joseph Boes of Chicago, and Thomas (Gail) Boes of New Riegel; plus many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his brothers and sisters, Erma Gosche, Florian “Mike” Boes, Hilda Blust, Dorothy Kuhn, Helen Heinrichs, and Alvern “Cy” Boes, Sr.
Mr. Boes graduated from St. Joseph Elementary School and worked as a farmer and at Tiffin Manufacturing. He then served in the US Army during World War II in Company F, 314th Infantry, 79th Division. He then returned home and worked as a carpenter. In September of 1953 he founded the New Riegel Cafe and also was a horseman.
He was a member of the American Legion Post 354 New Riegel, the Knights of Columbus, the US Trotting Association, the Ohio Horsemans Association, the Moose, Eagles, the Ohio and National Restaurant Associations, the New Riegel Volunteer Fire Department, the Elks, VFW, and the Seneca County Farm Bureau.
There will be a wake service 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 7, 2010, with visitation following from 2 to 8 pm, at Traunero Funeral Home, 214 South Monroe St., Tiffin, Ohio 44883 (419)447-3113.
Prayers will be said at the funeral home at 9:30 am Monday, February 8, followed by the Funeral Mass at 10 a.m, at St. Mary Catholic Church. Rev. Gary Walters will officiate, with burial to take place immediately following in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery with the New Riegel American Legion performing military rites at the grave site.
Memorials may be made to F.A.C.T., Calvert Catholic Schools, or to a charity of the donor’s choice, in care of Traunero Funeral Home
**Please note that the New Riegel Cafe will be closed early on Sunday and all day Monday in memory of Pete.
