Sister Mary Paul Jacoby, 89, of the Sisters of St. Francis in Tiffin, died Monday, April 5, 2004, at 6:45 a.m. at St. Francis Home, Tiffin, Ohio.
She was born August 7, 1914, in Carey, Ohio, to Selora (Brodman) and John Jacoby.
Surviving are: her sister, Mrs. Robert (Henrietta) Engle of Dayton, Ohio, and her brothers, Eugene Jacoby of Hamilton, Ohio, and Rev. Aloysius Jacoby, OFM Conv. of the Carey Franciscans, and numerous cousins, among whom is Sister Joann Brodman of the Tiffin Franciscans.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother-in-law, Robert Engle.
As a daughter of Our Lady of Consolation Parish, Sister Mary Paul was devoted to Mary and sought Our Lady’s guidance throughout her life.
She was also deeply interested in history and the blessings and gifts passed on from previous generations. Already in high school, she began an extensive genealogy of her family. She regularly attended the Logsdon Family Reunion, and she connected the generations as she shared anecdotes and stories of relatives past.
Sister Mary Paul taught primary grades at Custar, New Washington, Fort Jennings, Reed, St. Sebastian, Carey, New Cleveland, Landeck, Bucyrus, North Auburn, and Miller City as well as served as librarian in Payne. At the time of her death, she was a minister of prayer for the congregation.
Sister Mary Paul loved children and enjoyed over 40 years of teaching. She was always looking for new and creative ways to engage children in learning, and she was an excellent mentor for beginning teachers. Her love for children carried over into her retirement as she tutored some children from El Salvador in learning to read in English.
Sister Mary Paul resided in the Chiara Center at St. Francis Home since 2001. Often seen with a smile on her face, she enjoyed visits from family and friends, music, outdoor beauty and crafts. She especially enjoyed water color painting. One of her pictures, “Flowers in a Pot,” was framed and displayed by the Alzheimer’s Association at their Tiffin Gala 2002.
A Christian Wake Service will be 7:00 p.m. at the chapel.
Memorials can be made to St. Francis Home and the diabetes associations.
