Sister Emily was an avid reader. Carving and sewing were her favorite hobbies. Her first 560 pieces of art included ducks, deer, saints, angels, clinging crosses, and wood spirits. Her sister, Rita, and her aunt Helen, sparked her interest in doll-making. Seventeen of her 37 wood-carved dolls were modeled after her family members. Other carvings included the founder and foundress of her religious community, St. Francis of Assisi, and a smiling Jesus. Sister Emily said, “Each piece, in its own way, becomes a unique creation and a challenge.” “There is a kind of archetype in my carvings,” she said, and identified it as ‘happy carvings of the family life.’”
