Samuel G. Newhard, 66, of Tiffin, died at 5 am, Tuesday, June 7, 2005, at his residence.
He was born April 23, 1939, in Ancon, Panama Canal Zone, to the late Carl R. and Helen (Little) Newhard. On August 13, 1966, he married the love of his life, Ann (Martin) Newhard, and she survives.
Also surviving are three daughters, Carolyn (Tony) Gase, Nancy (Jim) Warnement, and Wendy (Jason) Bird, all of Tiffin; two brothers, Bruce (Karen) Newhard of Battle Creek, Michigan, and Carl (Helen) Newhard of Rogers, Arkansas. He was the proud grandfather of seven grandchildren: Eric and Jordan Gase; Ian, Owen, and Jacob Warnement; and Briannah and Brennan Bird.
Sam graduated in 1957 from Cristobol High School in Cristobol, Canal Zone of Panama. He was also a veteran of the United States Air Force. In 1966, Sam graduated from Hillsdale College, Hillsdale, Michigan. Sam retired in 2001 from United Insurance Service of Tiffin, where he was the claims manager. Sam was a Past President and an active member of the Tiffin Kiwanis Club. He was a member of and also served as an elder and Presbytery representative for the First Presbyterian Church, Tiffin.
Sam loved his family and was always involved in his daughters’ activities. He was instrumental in forming the girls’ ponytail league of Tiffin and was the commissioner for many years, attending all their games. His concern for the safety of others through his insurance experiences led him to become a crossing guard at Krout School upon his retirement. Being there for the kids’ safety each day was truly a joy for him. Sam loved fishing, camping, traveling, and spending time with family and friends.
Services will 11 am, Friday, June 10, 2005, at the First Presbyterian Church, with Pastor Richard Mahlmann officiating. Friends may call one hour prior to the services Friday at the church.
Memorials may be made to the First Presbyterian Church Scholarship Fund, Betty Jane Preschool Program, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
