God received another angel Tuesday when the gates of Heaven opened for Rita JoWan "Joanie" Somers, 84, of Tiffin. A choir of angels sang, and those whom passed before her embraced her with arms wide open. At 12:25 p.m. July 15, 2014, Joanie's journey to heaven began.
Joanie was born October 21, 1929 in Tiffin to Russel and Ollie (Breitigam) Greer. January 2, 1962 she married Robert Neile Somers, Jr. in Marion, Ohio, and he died May 22, 1998.
Survivors include four sons, Frederick J. (Sandra) Vondenberg of Tiffin, Bernard A. Vondenberg of Chillicothe, David A. Somers of Tiffin, Robert J. (Amy) Somers of Republic; four daughters, Rebecca J. Rose of Columbus, Mary D. Biller, Lori L. (Victor) Botton, Dawn A. (Greg) Hefner all of Tiffin; 27 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; and a sister, Elizabeth Barber of Sycamore.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Frederick Vondenberg; her second husband, Robert N. Somers, Jr.; a brother, Darrill (Vera) Arnold; three sisters, Barbara (Richard) Welty, Patricia (Glenn) Kummerer, Geraldine Greer; a grandson, Shannon Lee Vondenberg; and lifelong friend, Sonja Cleveland.
Joanie was a dispatcher for the Fort Ball Seneca REACT for many years. She was a strong supporter of the Calvert Seneca's football teams, where she enjoyed decorating the field house, locker rooms and baked cookies every week prior to the games. She was also a member of the Calvert Boosters, the Coast Guard Auxiliary, and a spotter at many local race tracks. Joanie was a homemaker and enjoyed playing Yahtzee, Rummikub, Canasta, and Rummy, and doing whatever she could for others. She was an avid Earnhardt and NASCAR fan, she watched every weekend, she was also a fan of the Oakland Raiders, and Los Angeles Dodgers.
Visitation and Services will be private.
