Mary Alice O’Connell, 96, of 175 St. Francis Ave. Tiffin, Ohio, died on May 4, 2005. Born in Spokane, Washington, on December 19, 1908, she was raised in Tiffin by her mother, Ursula, after the early death of her father, Otto Mathias. Mary Alice graduated from St. Ursula Academy in 1926 and was married to John (Bud) O’Connell, who preceded her in death, in 1928. Also preceding her in death is her daughter Patricia Wall and her mother, Ursula.
Mary Alice was a homemaker her entire married life. She was a charter member of Mohawk Ladies Bowling League. Even though legally blind, she continued to bowl weekly with the help of team members who would tell her what pins were left standing. She was an officer for many years in the Emblem Club, Tiffin Elks, serving as organist. Mary Alice composed the march that was used for many years for club activities. She was a precinct worker for primary and general elections for 15 years and a volunteer for the Tiffin Red Cross. Mary Alice and her husband were members of Mohawk Country Club for 50 years and long-time members of the Rockwell Springs Trout Club. She was a life-long member of St. Mary Catholic Church.
Mary Alice is survived by her daughter, Sally of Toledo, son, Timothy (Karen) of St. Petersburg, Florida, son-in-law, Robert Wall of Findlay, Ohio; six grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild. Private services will be conducted by Rev. James K. Say. Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider the Ursuline Convent, 4045 Indian Rd. Toledo, Ohio 43606. The family would like to give a special thanks to the staff of Hearth and Home, Friedman Village, who gave loving care for many years to their mother.
