Margaret D. “Peg” Smith, 89, of St. Francis Ave., Tiffin, died at 11:40 p.m. Friday, October 29, 2010, at St. Francis Home, Tiffin.
She was born August 4, 1921, in Ottawa County, to the late Peter and Margaret (Tschanhenz) Sloma. She married Richard J. Smith February 2, 1943, in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Fremont, and he died February 6, 1987.
Survivors include a son, Alan P.(Janice) Smith of Heath; three daughters, Deanna (Kenny Bitner) Balmer of Key Largo, FL, Alice (Dennis) Teynor of Bucyrus, and Jane (Mike) Bintz of Tiffin; 12 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, and 14 step-great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, a granddaughter Victoria Marie Smith, two brothers, Arthur and Clarence Sloma; and five sisters, Irene Sloma, Frances Reiter, Agnes Schultz, Catherine Wilhelm, and Sister Mary Leota Sloma, SND.
Mrs. Smith was a 1939 graduate of Fremont St. Joseph High School and retired from the J.J. Newberry Co., Tiffin, after 12 years of service as the “Candy Lady”. She was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Tiffin, the Rosary Altar Society and the Daughters of Isabella. She was an avid bowler at the Knights of Columbus, bowling in the Daughters of Isabella, Catholic Ladies and the Lady Knights Leagues all at the Knights of Columbus. She was also a volunteer for Community Hospice Care and the Red Cross. She had been an active blood donor and a long time poll worker for the Board of Elections.
Visitation will be at 5-8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov 2, 2010 at Traunero Funeral Home and Crematory, 214 S. Monroe St., Tiffin, Ohio 44883 (419)447-3113, with a wake service at 7:45 p.m. Prayers will be said at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday Nov. 3, 2010 at the funeral home, followed by the funeral Mass at 10 a.m. in St. Joseph Catholic Church, Tiffin, with Rev. Joseph Szybka officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Tiffin. The Rosary will be recited in church 20 minutes prior to Mass.
Memorials may be made to Community Hospice Care, Calvert Foundation, or St. Joseph Church, in care of the funeral home.
