Leonard J. Illig, 81, of Tiffin, died at 2:27 am Tuesday, November 25, 2014, at University of Toledo Medical Center.
He was born January 16, 1933, in Ebensburg, Pennsylvania, to Anicetus J. and Della (Byrne) Illig. He married Bernadette M. Parrish, November 22, 1958, in St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Loretto, Penn., and she survives.
Also surviving are two sons, Curt and Dale Illig, both of Tiffin; two daughters, Kim (Dan) Lucius of Tiffin, and Lynn Ann (John) Holmes of Toledo; eight grandchildren, Craig (Stephanie) Illig, Carah (Nick) Weber, Kyle Illig, Drew Lucius, Theresa Lucius, Luke Illig, Amber Holmes, and Chelsea Holmes; two great grandchildren, Emmaline and Landon Weber; and a brother, Robert Illig of San Diego, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, Ronald, Francis, and James Illig; and four sisters, Rita McCoy, Nancy Lauer, Betty Switzler, and Jean Welker.
Len was a 1951 graduate of Ebensburg-Cambria High School, Ebensburg, Penn. He then served in the US Army, Co. B, 164th Regimen, 3rd Division. He was discharged in 1955 as a Corporal. He retired in 1998 from Tiffin City Schools as a custodian after 12 years of service. He then worked as a funeral assistant for Traunero Funeral Home and Crematory from 1996 to 2012. Prior to that, he had worked for Beatrice Foods as a truck driver and salesman from 1966 to 1986.
He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, where he served as a Eucharistic minister. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, Allen Eiry Senior Center, and was an avid golfer. He scored a hole-in-one July 31, 1980 at Seneca Hills Golf Course.
Visitation will be Friday, November 28, 2014, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 pm, at Traunero Funeral Home and Crematory, 214 S. Monroe St., Tiffin, Ohio 44883 (419)447-3113. A Wake Service will be held at 1:30 p.m. the funeral home.
Prayers will be said at 9:30 am Saturday, November 29, at the funeral home, followed by the funeral Mass at 10 am, at St. Mary Catholic Church. Rev. Gary Walters will officiate, and burial with military honors will follow at St. Mary’s Cemetery. The Rosary will be recited in church 20 minutes prior to the Mass.
