John A. Baum, 101, of Tiffin, died 6:30 a.m. November 13, 2020, at Elmwood at the Shawhan.
He was born October 29, 1919, in Loudonville, Ohio to Cletus and Lucy (Sapp) Baum. He married Virginia L. Smith April 11, 1959, in Zanesville and she died February 3, 2018.
Survivors include two sons, Mark A. (Sue) Baum of Tiffin, and John D. (Linda Nihiser) Baum of Republic; and a daughter, Mary A. (Gerard) Kimmet of New Riegel; five grandchildren, Kelly Widman, Jennifer Harkins, Rebecca Somers, Nicole Harvey, Jessica Lacek; five great grandchildren, Austin Widman, Devin Widman, Kelsey Alford, Brianna Harkins, and Maci Somers.
He is preceded in death by his wife, Virginia, parents, and a brother, R. Edward Baum.
John was a graduate of Loudonville High School, and a 1941 Ohio State University graduate. He served in the United States Army from 1942 – 1946 during WWII, and he retired from the Air Force Reserves as a Lt. Col. in 1979. During his younger years, he farmed. He then became a Farm Service Representative for Ohio Power. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.
There will be no visitation.
The funeral Mass will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, November 18, 2020, at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Rev. Joseph Szybka will officiate. The Rosary will be recited 30 minutes prior to the Mass at the church. Attendees are asked to wear masks and social distance. Burial will take place at 2 p.m. Wednesday, at St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery, Loudonville. Military rites will be conducted at the cemetery by the Loudonville American Legion.
Memorial contributions may be made to F.A.C.T. or to St. Joseph Catholic Church.
