Herman J. Ewald, age 104, of 182 St. Francis Ave., Tiffin died 5:45 PM Monday December 20, 2004 at St. Francis Home. He was born November 4, 1900 in Tiffin, Ohio to the late Joseph and Otillia (Buchman) Ewald. On July 13, 1931, in St. Joseph Catholic Church in Tiffin he married Jane C. Chamberlain. She died January 1, 1986. Survivors include two sons: Richard J. (Chris) Ewald and James R. (Jane) Ewald both of Tiffin. Seven grandchildren: Melinda Ewald, Michael Ewald, Joseph Ewald, Daniel Ewald, Eric Ewald, Kathryn Pfoff, and Mary Stover, 18 great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild. He is preceded by one brother; John Ewald, and 3 sisters: Emma McNamara, Margaret Weaver, and Anna Fulghum.
Mr. Ewald was a 1918 Columbian High School graduate and he attended Heidelberg College.
He was the former owner of Ewald Furniture. He was first in this district to see the advantage of having a business in the country by building a new store in 1953 on St. Rte 100. He was in the Ohio National Guard for one year. He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. He was a past Grand Knight of council 608 of Knights of Columbus and was a member for over 75 years.
He was a Tiffin Elks Lodge member for over 48 years. He lived at Elizabeth Schaffer Apartments from 1987 to 2000. He enjoyed sports especially bowling and golf.
Rev. James Say and Rev. Richard Dunn will officiate the funeral Mass on Friday. Burial will take place immediately following the Mass in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Memorial contributions made be made to St. Francis Home, Calvert Foundation, St. Joseph Catholic Church, or to a charity of the donor’s choice in care of Hannay-Traunero Funeral Home, 214 S.
