Dr. Elwood J. Hoffert, 93, of Tiffin, died at 5:55 pm Saturday, June 13, 2009 at St. Francis Home, Tiffin. He was born on June 22, 1915, in Eden Township, Seneca County to the late William J. and Anna Lucretia (Stever) Hoffert. Dr. Hoffert was married January 1, 1938 in Columbus, Ohio, to Marian (Engle) Hoffert who survives him.
In addition to his wife, Marian, Dr. Hoffert is survived by daughters Carolyn M. (Paul) Nightingale of Cincinnati, and Betty L. Zambrano of Gresham, OR, and sons Lt Col (USA-Ret) Thomas M.(Joanne) Hoffert of Fremont, Lt Col (USAF-Ret), Richard L.(Helen) Hoffert of Shalimar, FL. and William J.(Karen) Hoffert of Tiffin. Dr. Hoffert is also survived by seven grandchildren: Laura L. (Hoffert) Scrivner of Harrison, OH, John T. Hoffert of Fremont, Steven L. Bower of Wyoming, OH, Karla (Hoffert) Short of Pataskala, OH, Christopher M. Bower of Grosse Pointe, MI, Andrew J. Zambrano of Lemoore, CA and Amelia Zambrano of Gresham, OR, and 12 great-grandchildren, Ashley and Thailyr Scrivner of Harrison, OH, Nicholas Aprile of Columbus, Kourtney and Haley Gwilliams and Margot and Seth Short of Pataskala, OH., Allison and Eric Bower of Wyoming, OH, Alexander and Lucas Bower of Grosse Pointe, MI, A.J. Zambrano of Lemoore, CA, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Timothy Engle Hoffert, in 1984; two brothers Morris and Wenner Hoffert; and three sisters, Mildred Ryder, Margery Juniper and Gaetta Murray.
Dr. Hoffert graduated from Melmore High School in 1933 and the Ohio State University College of Veterinary Medicine in 1938.
Dr. Hoffert operated a primarily large animal veterinary medical practice for over 44 years in Sandusky County and the surrounding area. He and his wife lived in Fremont, Ohio, for 50 years before moving to Tiffin.
Prior to assuming his practice in Fremont, he tested cattle for the U.S. Bureau of Animal Industry in North Carolina and Michigan, and then worked for the Northern Ohio Breeders Association as one of its first veterinarians.
Dr. Hoffert will be remembered for his dedication to his family and his profession, and for his ready sense of humor. He had an enduring affection for the rural countryside and enjoyed creating music and art. He was a member of the Ohio State University Alumni Association, the American Veterinary Medical Association and the Ohio VMA. He had been a member of St. Ann’s Parish in Fremont.
Visitation will be from 2-4 & 6-8 pm Tuesday, June 16, 2009 at Traunero Funeral Home, 214 S. Monroe Street, Tiffin, Ohio 44883 (419) 447-3113 and 10:30 – 11:00 am Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at St. Francis Home Chapel.
The Funeral Mass will be at 11:00 am Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at the St. Francis Home Chapel with Rev. Kieran Kay officiating. Burial will take place immediately following in Rock Creek Cemetery.
Contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice in care of Traunero Funeral Home.
