Donald James Corthell, age 83, of Parkview Drive, Tiffin, Ohio died at 10:36 pm Monday, January 19, 2009, at St. Vincent-Mercy Medical Center, Toledo, Ohio.
Don was born December 23, 1925, in Seneca County, to the late George and Orpha (Haines) Corthell. On January 3, 1948, he married Carmella Dariano in St. Mary Church of Tiffin, and she survives.
He is also survived by one son, Ronald (Laura Bartolo) Corthell of Kent, Ohio; four daughters, Nancy (Joel) Taylor of Morrilton, AR, Joan (Chuck) Webster of Cleveland Heights OH, Beth (Felicia Sauder) Corthell of Plain City, OH, and Ann (Steve) Pamer of Medina, OH;10 grandchildren, Austin, Tessa, Seth Corthell, Zachary Taylor, Jennifer Janis, Sarah & Margaret Webster, Elizabeth, Matthew, & Emily Pamer; 3 great-grandchildren, Ruby & Sophia Janis, and Anoushka Taylor; two brothers, Paul Corthell of Oak Harbor, and Kenneth Corthell of Tiffin; and one sister, Janette Holmer of Vancouver, WA.
Don was preceded in death by three brothers, William, Robert, and John Corthell; and two sisters, Catherine Brooks and Helen Cole.
Don was a 1943 Columbian High School graduate. He served in the Navy as a Sonar Man in the Pacific Theater from 1943 to 1946. He retired after 40 years from Hossler Construction Company where he worked as a project foreman and carpenter. He was a member of St. Mary Catholic Church, the American Legion, the Knights of Columbus, and the St. Mary’s Bereavement Committee. He was very active at St. Mary’s. Don built the outdoor Nativity Scene and served for many years as an usher. He also helped with many carpentry projects at St. Mary’s.
Prayers will be said at 10 am Saturday, January 24, 2009 in the funeral home, followed by the funeral Mass at 10:30 am at St. Mary Catholic Church. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Cemetery, with military rites conducted by the United Veterans Council of Seneca County.
The Rosary will be recited in Church at 10:10 am Saturday.
Contributions may be made to St. Mary Catholic Church or to the Calvert Catholic Schools in care of Traunero Funeral Home.
