Donald Lee Hammer “Don”, 69 years young, passed away Thursday, November 11, 2021. He was born February 11, 1952, in Tiffin, to Herbert and Helen (Smith) Hammer. He married Cathe (Ray) Hammer on October 7, 1972, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Tiffin Ohio and she survives. They made a great team.
Also surviving are his four children, Joe (Jessica) Hammer, Gina (Paul) Shoemaker, Matt (Kali) Hammer, Brad (Julie) Hammer; 12 grandchildren, Kian and Hudson Hammer; AJ, Braxton, Leah, and Macie Shoemaker; Hendrix, Coby and Layla Hammer; Mya, Maddox and Charlie Hammer; 12 siblings, David (Sandy) Hammer, Diana Phoenix, Tom (Carol) Hammer, Bill (Diane) Hammer, Lou (Len) Coleman, Gerilyn Hammer, Mary Baker, Patie (Dave) Elchert, Eileen (John) Hoover, Lois (Jim) Boatman, Roger (Deb) Hammer, Mike (Vicki) Hammer, Barb (Randy) Fry; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents, step-mother Rita (Streacker) Hammer, a brother, Ken Hammer, and a brother-in-law Ken Baker.
Don was a 1970 graduate of Hopewell-Loudon High School. He served his country in the United States Air Force from 1971-1975. He retired after working 30 years at Frito Lay in sales. Everyone knew him as the “Chipman”. After retirement, he went to work for S.C.A.T. He was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and was an altar server and Eucharistic minister. He attended Mass and prayed the rosary daily. He was very active with the Tiffin Right to Life.
Don also enjoyed attending as many of his children’s and grandchildren’s sporting events and activities. He was kind and caring and was always the first person to help his family and others out with anything that was needed. Don enjoyed playing golf with his buddies. He was especially proud of his 2 Holes-in-one.
He was always there for his grandkids and showed them, love, through his teasing and joking. He will always be remembered as a loving husband, father, and grandfather.
Visitation for Don will be held on Sunday, November 14, 2021, from 1:00 - 5:00 p.m. at Traunero Funeral Home, 214 Monroe Street, Tiffin, Ohio 44883 (419) 447-3113. A wake service will be at 5 p.m. at the funeral home.
Prayers will be said at the funeral home at 9:30 a.m. Monday, November 15, 2021, followed by the funeral Mass at 10 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, officiated by Rev. Joseph Szybka. The rosary will be recited 30 minutes prior to the Mass at the church. Burial will immediately follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery. Military graveside services will be conducted by the United Veterans Council of Seneca County.
Memorial contributions may be made to St. Joseph Catholic Church, Calvert Catholic Schools, or to Tiffin Right to Life.
