David Lee Mathias, 69, of Frenchtown, went to his eternal reward at 2:29 p.m. on Saturday, April 22, 2017, at Mercy Health-St. Vincent Medical Center, Toledo. He was born July 11, 1947, in Tiffin to Herman L. and Agnes J. (Borer) Mathias. He married his high school sweetheart, Rose Marie Reinhart, on August 3, 1968, at Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church, Alvada, and she survives.
Other survivors include four sons, Jeffrey Lee Mathias of Frenchtown, Jayme Lee (Anthony Tang) Mathias of Austin, Texas, Jeremy Lee Mathias of Las Vegas, Nevada, and Joey Lee (Erin) Mathias of Toledo; three grandchildren, Esther, Felix David, and Gideon Mathias of Toledo; three brothers, John (Betty) Mathias of New Riegel, Louis (Marilyn) Mathias of Jackson, Michigan, Gerald (Mary Kay) Mathias of Burgoon, and a sister, Mary Margaret (Eugene) Miller of Bryan.
He is preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Marion Mathias.
After graduating from New Riegel High School in 1965, David worked as a draftsman and maintenance foreman for ITT, Sterling, NeoWood and Hays/Albion. He also served as a forklift operator at M-Tek. Later in life, he was the owner of the New Riegel Gas Plus in New Riegel and of Hydraulic Service and Seals in Frenchtown. He was an active, lifelong member of St. Nicholas Catholic Church in Frenchtown, where he was a eucharistic minister, trained altar servers, and served as Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus Council 10749. He served as Cubmaster of Pack 435 and as Scoutmaster of Troop 435 in New Riegel. For many years, he was a volunteer emergency medical technician in New Riegel. He enjoyed playing cards with family and with his friends of the Knights of Columbus and of the United Sportsmen of Fostoria. He also enjoyed golfing, bowling, fishing, visiting his sons in Austin and Las Vegas, and spending time with his grandchildren.
Visitation for family and friends will be 4-8 p.m. Monday, April 24, 2017, at Traunero Funeral Home and Crematory, 214 S. Monroe Street, Tiffin, Ohio 44883 (419) 447-3113, ending with a wake service at 8 p.m., and visitation from 9:30-10:30 a.m. Tuesday, April 25, 2017 at All Saints Parish, St. Nicholas Chapel, Frenchtown.
The funeral Mass will follow at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will take place immediately following, in St. Nicholas Cemetery, Frenchtown.
