Betty June (Salisbury) Wetta

June 30, 1926 — February 25, 2019

Tiffin

Betty June Wetta, 92, of Tiffin, died at 3:00 A.M. on Monday, February 25, 2019, at Seneca House.  She was born June 30, 1926, to John and Reba Salisbury in Portsmouth, Ohio. She married David K. Wetta, August 18, 1951, in Portsmouth, Ohio.  He died July 28, 2011.

Together they had five children, all of whom survive her: Kathy, of Medina, Mindy and Tom Edwards of Sandusky, Sue and Ken Ritzler and Barb and Steve Schumm of Tiffin, and Scott and Kelley Wetta of Medina. Betty was welcoming to her sons-in-law and daughter-in-law and embraced them as her own. Betty is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren: Ana (Greg) Bachelor and children Maksim and Sofia; Adriano D. Wetta; Nathan (Brad Daugherty) Edwards; Chad (Kaitlyn) Edwards and children Ronan, Gideon, and Athanasius; Amy Edwards; Tim (Renee) Schumm and children Reece, Ryker, and Riley; Katie (Kevin) Firestone and children Kaelyn, Avery, and Brynn; Andy (Amanda) Ritzler and children Landon, Logan and Lily; Jackie (Dan) Rannebarger) and children Emma and Daniel; Ryan (Krista) Schumm and son Jaxtyn; Sara Schumm (fiance Joe Etgen); Erin (Danny) Stroub and children Payton, Parker, and Paige; Olivia Wetta; Hailey Wetta (fiance Nolan Pachciarz) and Claire Wetta.

Waiting to greet Betty in heaven were her parents, her husband, David, a sister, Mary Jane Goodman, a granddaughter Connie Edwards, a great-grandson London Ritzler, and son-in-law Michael Schumm.

She was a 1944 graduate of Portsmouth High School and worked for several years at the Portsmouth National Bank. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church.

Betty’s greatest legacy is her family. She was a devoted wife to David for nearly 60 years, a loving mother, and a doting and generous grandmother and great-grandmother. She loved to sing and taught all of her children to harmonize on long car trips to visit their grandparents. She made the best apple and cream pies in the world, and often donated pies to the St. Joseph Church Festival. Her grandchildren could always count on an ice cream sandwich or sundae when they came to visit.

The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at Seneca House for their loving care of our mother for the last months of her life.  Also, thank you to Heartland Hospice for their understanding and care.

As per her wishes, cremation and a private burial at St. Joseph Cemetery will take place, where Betty will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband.

The family will celebrate her life with a memorial Mass, at 4:00 P.M. Thursday, February 28, 2019, at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Rev. Joseph Szybka officiating.

Memorial contributions may be made to Seneca House in care of Betty Wetta Memorial.
