Anne Marie Steinmetz, 83, peacefully passed away, surrounded by her immediate family, on June 29, 2014. She was born to Lawrence F. and Margaret L. (Bour) Fleck on June 16, 1931 in Tiffin, Ohio. Anne was married to Richard J. Steinmetz on April 21, 1951 in St. Mary Church, Tiffin and he preceded her in death on July 1, 2009. They were best friends and companions for 58 years
She is survived by two loving sons: Mark A. (Dorothy) Steinmetz of Tiffin and Matthew D. (Diane) Steinmetz of Fostoria. Four grandchildren are Nathan C. (fiancée Heidi Gernheuser and her son Derk), Jessica A., Eric J. and Kelli A. Also, three great grandchildren: Aiden, Adison and Anderson; a brother, Richard Fleck of Tiffin and a sister, Ida Schauder of Clearwater, FL.
She was also preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Martha M. Fleck, and a brother, James.
Anne was a life-long member of St. Mary Church. She was a member of the St. Mary Folk Choir, the mixed choir and the woman’s choir for the past 43 years as well as having been a Eucharistic minister and serving on the liturgy committee.
She was also a member of the St. Mary Altar Rosary Society and the Seneca County Historical Society. For many years she was a seamstress in her home, making costumes and clothing for her two sons as well as doing seamstress work for many. Her skills in artwork and sewing allowed her to produce and donate many church banners for her church in years past. She produced several school banners over the years, including her latest one in 2007.
Anne was a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts in the 1960’s. She taught Pre-school Religion Class on Sundays, as well as a kinder garden aide at St. Mary School for a period of eight years. In addition, she taught an “Arts and Crafts” class (7th Grade), all on a voluntary basis for 15 years. All totaled, Anne gave of herself to St. Mary School for a total of 43 years. She was one of four selected to receive the 2005 ‘LEWIE’ award in the “Volunteer” category at an awards night celebrated in April, 2005 in Toledo. She taught her last “Arts and Crafts” class on May 25, 2007 at 75 years of age.
She served on the renovation committee in the past when St. Mary Church was being altered to conform with Vatican II. She also served on the renovation committee in 2001, when the church was renovated.
Anne loved traveling with her husband, especially on day trips to Amish Country and along scenic highways during the fall months. She had many pets over the years, but cherished her dogs: Boots, Missy, Buffy and Molly as if they were members of her family. Anne also enjoyed fishing, hiking (in the early years) and feeding the backyard birds and squirrels. One of her all-time favorite pastimes was to go for rides in the early evening to watch the young lambs in the meadows and to look for wild deer; a beautiful animal Anne loved to watch and enjoy. Anne will be forever missed by family and friends, but her legacy of volunteerism, along with love and compassion for animals, will be carried on by those who she touched in life.
