Agnes J. Mathias, 90, of Carey, died at 10:12 p.m., Thursday, April 5, 2012 at Volunteers of America, Autumnwood Care Center, Tiffin.
Agnes was born in Big Spring Township, New Riegel, September 25, 1921 to the late Anthony and Clara (Hoepf) Borer. She married Herman L. Mathias November 26, 1942 in St. Joseph Catholic Church, and he preceded her in death March 27, 1981.
She is survived by four sons, John H. (Betty) Mathias of New Riegel, Louis J. (Marilyn) Mathias of Jackson, Mich., Gerald H. (Mary Kay) Mathias of Burgoon, and David L. (Rose) Mathias of Frenchtown; one daughter, Mary Margaret (Eugene) Miller, of Bryan; 25 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; and one sister, Martha Kirchner of Tiffin.
Agnes was preceded in death by a son, Marion Mathias; two granddaughters, Annette and Christine Mathias; and four sisters, Catherine Carp, Isabella Steinmetz, Anna Bentz, and Cecilia Borer.
Agnes was a graduate of St. Joseph Catholic Grade School and a 1939 Calvert High School graduate. She was a farm wife, homemaker and a mother. She was a member of All Saints Parish, St. Nicholas Chapel, Frenchtown. She belonged to the Sewing Club since 1937, Daughters of Isabella since 1945, the Birthday Club since 1995, the New Riegel Catholic Order of Foresters Branch #52 since Jan. 1996, the Allen Eiry Senior Center, the St. Nicholas Funeral Choir and a past member of the Adult Choir. She was a long time volunteer for the American Red Cross.
Visitation will be 3-8 p.m. Monday, April 9, 2012 at Traunero Funeral Home and Crematory, 214 S. Monroe Street, Tiffin, Ohio 44883 (419) 447-3113. The Catholic Foresters of Ohio will perform a service followed by the Wake Service at 4:00 p.m. at the funeral home.
Visitation will also be 9:00 – 9:45 a.m. Tuesday, April 10, 2012 with prayers at 9:45 a.m. at the funeral home. The funeral Mass will be 10:30 a.m. at St. Nicholas Chapel, All Saints Parish, Frenchtown with Rev. Timothy Kummerer officiating. Burial will be in St. Nicholas Catholic Cemetery. The rosary will be recited 20 minutes prior to the Mass at the church.
Memorial contributions may be made to Calvert Catholic Schools, Marianist Mission, Cincinnati, Miraculous Medal, Pennsylvania or to a charity of the donor’s choice in care of the funeral home.
