Allen Eugene "Gene" Barto, 85, of Tiffin, died at 8:20 p.m. Friday, September 8, 2023, at the Willows at Tiffin.  He was born April 10, 1938, in Seneca County to Oral and Alice (Longanbach) Barto. He first married Jane Heckerd September 5, 1957, in Tiffin, and she died July 4, 2023.  He married Patricia L. McCoy, October 20, 1988, in Indiana, and she survives.

Other survivors include a son, Rodney A. (Christi) Barto of Crystal River, Florida; a daughter, Michele (Dale) Sopher of Paola, Kansas; a step-daughter, Cathy McClung of Catawba, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Ashlee, Austin, Jared, Kyle, Abigail, Cole and Megan; a brother, Larry Barto of Davidson, North Carolina; and four sisters, Doris Dull of Ft. Seneca, Bonnie Hull of Old Fort, Debora Barto of Fresno, California, and Rebecca Berry of Green Springs.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Lorilee Rose Barto, and a sister, Joanne Hirt.

Gene was a 1957 graduate of Old Fort High School, and he had served in the United States Army Reserves. He had been a farmer from 1958 to 2003 and was a basketball coach for many years for area youth who were honing their skills.

There will be no visitation or funeral services.  Arrangements have been entrusted to Traunero Funeral Home and Crematory, 214 S. Monroe Street, Tiffin, Ohio 44883 (419) 447-3113.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Tiffin Columbian Girls Basketball Program or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
